Its rounded branches and connected nodes can be read as multiple computers linked together into one distributed computing network, while the overall silhouette also resembles a virus or microscopic organism. That connection is intentional: the Hardware.no community contributed unused computer processing power to distributed research projects related to diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s and various forms of cancer. Glossy highlights, soft 3D shading and irregular bubble-like forms give the icon a biological character instead of a typical rigid tech appearance. In a way, the network and the problem it helps fight are hidden inside the same symbol.
